The Encaustic Process of Brookhaven Artist Lauren Loden: Paint, Burn, Repeat
We recently visited Brookhaven artist Lauren Loden, who has mastered the patience-testing process of paint, burn, repeat. At a glance, that’s the essence of encaustic artwork. Rooted in centuries-old tradition, encaustic art involves heating natural beeswax and resin mixed with colored pigment, painting it onto a wooden canvas, and then fusing it with heat. Her dynamically intricate encaustic paintings have captivated the community, with her work showcased at Marguerite’s on Dresden and Explore Brookhaven’s annual Art Pop-Up + Shop.
The Journey to Encaustic Art
Lauren’s artistic journey began at the age of five when her mother enrolled her in watercolor lessons on the beaches of Charleston, South Carolina. Those early lessons sparked a lifelong passion for creative expression. Though Lauren enjoyed creating as a child, it wasn’t until adulthood, after stepping away from a successful advertising career to focus on being a full-time mother, that she fully embraced her calling as an artist.
“When my youngest started school, I was able to dive back into what I truly love,” Lauren shared. Reigniting her passion for artistic expression, she immersed herself in encaustic art, discovering its unique process for the first time under the guidance of fellow artist Penny Treese. Today, her work draws inspiration from children, nature, and the serendipitous connections she experiences in daily life.
Her Studio
Stepping into Lauren Loden’s home studio is like entering a living, breathing canvas. Her quaint basement studio is a delightful blend of classic and eclectic styles. Monet-printed wallpaper sets a serene tone, while vintage furniture and a playful Lego family portrait offer pops of whimsy. The heart of the studio is her seating area, anchored by a bookshelf filled with books by her favorite artists and a disco ball overhead adding a lively glow to the space.
But the real magic happens at her workbench. Here, vats of warmed beeswax, colorful pigments, and an array of well-worn paintbrushes are begging to be used in her next creation. The atmosphere is full of vibrant anticipation, each tool and material holding the promise of a new masterpiece. The artwork she created on the beach during those first lessons is displayed in her studio, serving as a nostalgic reminder of where it all began, while her current pieces now fill the space, each one a testament to the continued evolution of her craft.
The Art of Encaustic Painting
Rolling up her sleeves, Lauren takes us through her process step-by-step, starting with the wooden canvas. She tapes off the edges, a crucial step to keep the canvas clean and create crisp edges. Next, she evenly distributes a generous layer of the wax-resin mixture, heated to the perfect temperature for malleability. Blowtorch in hand, she fuses the wax to the canvas, repeating the process twice more to create a sturdy, textured base.
This is where Lauren’s creativity shines brightest. Her deep understanding of color and heat guides her as she applies the pigment and wax mixture with an intuitive flow, letting the colors and textures evolve naturally. The blowtorch is her paintbrush, transforming the wax with every pass of the flame. Swirling patterns, soft gradients, and rich textures begin to emerge. It’s in these moments that Lauren’s artistic vision comes alive. Each piece is a one-of-a-kind creation, unrepeatable and undeniably captivating.
Sharing Her Passion with the Community
Lauren is passionate about sharing her process with others. She welcomes commissions, working with clients to create encaustic art tailored to their preferences. From discussing initial concepts to choosing colors, textures, and design elements, Lauren ensures each piece aligns with the client’s unique vision.
She’s also eager to teach the next generation of artists. “As far as giving back to the community, art is a great way to connect everyone together” Lauren stated. She offers lessons that cater to all ages and skill levels, welcoming anyone who’s curious about the art of encaustic painting. Her classes provide a hands-on experience where participants can learn the fundamentals of encaustic art and create their own unique pieces to take home.
A Lasting Impression
Lauren Loden’s work is a testament to the beauty of patience, process, and passion. Her encaustic paintings capture more than color. They capture the heart of an artist devoted to her craft and her community. Whether you’re acquiring her art at Marguerite’s on Dresden, marveling at her creations at Brookhaven’s Art Pop-Up + Shop, or learning from her in a workshop, one thing is certain. Lauren’s art leaves an impression that’s as enduring as the wax on her canvas.
