Honoring the Women Shaping Brookhaven
Brookhaven is a community brimming with trailblazing women who are making their mark in business, leadership, and education. From entrepreneurs who bring flavor and culture to our neighborhoods to leaders advocating for growth and inclusivity, these women inspire us all. Their remarkable contributions have made a lasting impact on our community.
Building Businesses
Brookhaven’s business scene is thriving, thanks in part to the women who have built their dreams from the ground up. Take Jan Bolgla, co-owner of Atlanta Vintage Books. Since 2007, Bolgla has fostered a love of reading by curating an extensive collection of used books. Through her interactive events and dedication to the written word, she’s created a welcoming space for readers of all ages.
Then there’s Sue Jones, whose passion for baking led to the creation of Curly Sue Cookies in 2014. What started with a cottage food license has grown into a beloved local business. Brookhaven residents can find her delicious cookies at the Brookhaven Farmers Market, Savi Provisions, and Nuts 'n Berries. Jones has even expanded her offerings with dry cookie mixes and frozen dough for those wanting to enjoy fresh-baked treats at home. And for cookie lovers beyond Brookhaven, Sue ships her creations nationwide every Tuesday through her website.

Inspiring the Next Generation
Brookhaven is also home to women dedicated to inspiring the next generation. Lily Pabian, Executive Director of We Love Buford Highway since 2019, grew up along the vibrant Buford Highway corridor. Her deep understanding and love for the area fuel her commitment to celebrating its cultural diversity. Through her leadership, Pabian has launched programs that educate, uplift, and serve the local community. Her efforts have not gone unnoticed, as she earned a well-deserved spot on Atlanta Magazine's 500 Most Powerful Leaders list in January 2025.
Over at Oglethorpe University, the future of education is in visionary hands. Dr. Kathryn McClymond made history as the university’s first female president when she took office in November 2023. Inspired by her mother’s act of providing educational opportunities to a friend, Dr. McClymond has dedicated her career to expanding access to education. In her inaugural address on September 20, 2024, she outlined her mission to make Oglethorpe the premier undergraduate experience in the Atlanta Metro by the university's bicentennial celebration in 2035.

Propelling Brookhaven Forward
Brookhaven’s leadership landscape is enriched by influential women making a difference. District 2 Councilmember Jennifer Owens stepped into her role on August 22, 2023. As President and CEO of HealthMPowers, she has spent years promoting healthier habits for Georgia’s youth. Now, she brings that same dedication to public service. With her support, Brookhaven’s first entertainment district was established on Dresden Drive in 2024, further enhancing the community’s vibrant social scene.
Representing District 3, Councilmember Madeleine Simmons was first elected in 2019 and began her second term in November 2024. An equity partner at Stewart Miller Simmons Trial Attorneys, she champions justice both in the courtroom and within her community. Simmons' passion for advocacy has driven her support for significant park improvements in Brookhaven, including upgrades to Brookhaven Park and the creation of Langford Park.
Over at the Brookhaven Police Department, Sergeant Carlai Moore is making a powerful impact by deepening the connection between law enforcement and the community. As the leader of the Community Engagement Unit, she plays a vital role in building trust and ensuring open communication between residents and officers. Through her leadership, the unit hosts memorable events such as National Night Out, the Hot Pursuit Glow Run 5K, and Shop with a Badge, creating opportunities for residents to engage with officers in meaningful ways. Sergeant Carlai Moore’s dedication to community engagement continues to make Brookhaven a safer, more connected place for all.
And let’s not forget Renée Areng, President and CEO of Explore Brookhaven. Since joining Explore Brookhaven in 2018, Areng has forged connections with local businesses and highlighted Brookhaven’s unique attractions. Her leadership has boosted the city’s reputation, drawing new visitors while supporting local growth. Areng’s efforts have been instrumental in making Brookhaven a sought-after destination in the Atlanta metro area. By fostering relationships with stakeholders and promoting Brookhaven’s distinctive charm, she has played a pivotal role in shaping the city’s vibrant identity. Areng’s vision continues to drive the growth of Brookhaven, ensuring that it remains a dynamic and welcoming community for years to come.

Continuing the Legacy
These women have not only left their mark on Brookhaven, but they’ve also cleared the path for others to follow. With their vision, innovation, and unwavering commitment, they are transforming the community into a place that values creativity and progress. The lasting impact of their work will continue to shape Brookhaven in ways that inspire and uplift for years to come.
